Blossoming Decorex

August is always Decorex month in Joburg and after not having attended Decorex for the past few years I finally made the time to go visit this years show, main reason being due to the newly launched 100% design. 100% Design was launched this year and is a high-end curated showcase of the most inspirational designs and designers. It's the ideal platform for showcasing  South African and international brands in the furnitures, fabrics, products, lighting and design industries.

Products:

This years expo was packed with a variety of products, and we made some cool new finds!  Some of the items and stands that stood out include funky textured tiles on the AGL stand (see images), Lansdowne boards from Cape Town that supply a wonderful range of textured panels that can be custom designed and coloured for various applications. Fabcote showcased an amazing range of designer wallpapers (so GORGEOUS!!!) as well as an exciting new LED wallpaper - will be interesting to see how this technology eventually evolves!

The arts:

There was also an entire hall devoted to the arts! I met artist Peter Hall and had a great chat with him regarding his subject matter and the amazing scenes he paints - Joburg city scapes - but with a difference! A varied perspective of the city, through an almost blurred lens! I love the monotone colour scheme and his use of brush stroke, creating a sombre, subdued mood. I think these paintings are wonderful for contemporary spaces. On the subject of contemporary... I fell in love with the "mylandscapes" stand products. Mike Kaplan and Des Kleineibst are photographers that take breathtaking photo's of vistas and landscapes... they now print these images onto modern mediums such as brushed aluminium. This creates an almost 3-dimensional effect and gives the images a new dimension and feel.

Acoustics:

One of the most impressive products I saw was the acoustic panels being displayed at 100% design - they are amazing! The sound absorption demo was mind blowing - 4 lightweight and easy to transport panels completely eliminated all the sound resonance within the demo room!  I managed to attend one of the talks at the show - which happened to be about office acoustics. This is something that is critical within the work environment, but sadly often overlooked, resulting in lower motivation, reduced productivity, more sick leave and increased staff turnover - but that's a subject that deserves it's own blog - so watch this space!

Some of the other ranges/products that stood out for me in the 100% design hall were

- Indigi Designs

- Ligne Roset

- Inova Contracts

- Willow lamp

- Glo lighting

This years expo was fabulous - left feeling inspired and excited to incorporate some of the new finds into upcoming designs!
